6. My response to this paragraph is that this is an innocent couple struggling from the Great Depression. It appears as if they had been working all day, and I can tell by the clothing and attitudes on their faces that they are giving each other. It also looks like the sun is about to set and they are tired from their long work days. It appears as if they have no home, and most of the people during this time suffered from. Overall, I think that this picture is once again trying to show the difficulty and the hardships of life through the 1930’s.

6. My response to this paragraph is that it is basically showing the youth how people suffered through the great depression, and how hard that they had to work in order to get a little food or money. Also, the negativity of the picture shows that these people, especially the young child, does not want to be doing what they are doing right at that moment. But, they must do all this work in order to survive. Their tattered clothing and the heavy tools that they are carrying shows us what they must have to do on a daily basis.
7. –What was the significances of the x’s at the bottom of the picture?
- Why did you take a picture of the whole family instead of showing just one person?

6. This picture I think gives off a negative feel because the very few people and their depressing moods. Even though it’s in the daytime, the area is really shabby and the people look like they have been waiting in this city area for quite some time to earn money off of the newspapers. If they are not waiting for business, then they must be waiting for something in their formal outfits. I’m guessing that they are trying to make money for their families because of the time era: The Great Depression.
7. Why are the men dressed all formally?
What was the inspiration of taking this photograph at this time?

1).This picture was photographed by Lange, Dorothea and was taken in June, 1936. During The Great Depression .
2). The setting of this picture is clearly outside at an abounded farm. Since it is in a farm it's location is rural and it is during the day.
3). In this picture I see no people, all I see is the old cracked drop, that used to be corn, once before The Great Depression. In This picture what really catches my is the old dead crops on the farm land that, once were corn. This helps symbolize what were some of the effects of The Great Depression. Such as, when farmers had no more money to maintain their fields. The crops would start to die. Also, Dust Bowls started to occur when farmers no longer maintain the fields in which their crops once grew. So this caused by bad irrigation and drought
5). The tone of this photograph is extremely depressing. Since this picture helps symbolize the saddest that The Great Depression left everyone. Since when the stock market had crashed in 1929, causing about 40% of the paper values to disappear. Causing many people to loose their jobs, factories and farms. This caused many people to be homeless, living in poverty. Many had to live in cardboard boxes as a way of shelter. The Great Depression was bitter time in our American history, which made millions distressed.
6). I feel that the mood of this picture is bitter and depressing. Since everything you may see that is dieing is unpleasant. Also, since The great Depression was one of the saddest times in our American history, which also causes the mood of this picture to be very mournful. I also believe that this photograph helps symbolize a time in which our country was in great sorrow.
7a). What gave you the you the idea of taking a photograph of the wilting corn?
7b). What was the mood you were you trying to imply, while taking this photograph.

1) .This picture was photographed by Evans Walker in 1935. In main street Selma Alabama.
2). This photograph was taken outside during the day, since there is a lot of lighting. Also, the picture takes place in an urban setting, because there are many stores, people and cars. This indicates that the picture was taken in a city.
3). There are people in this photograph, about nine to ten. For the age group I would have to guess between 30's and 50's. Since I can't really tell, because you can't indefitiy the people clearly to get an accurate response. Mostly everyone is dressed in black and white. I also that everyone is wearing suits, which helps me distinguish that this area must be a working place.
4). The structures I see in this photograph are small businesses. Since I see many people wearing suits, so they must be working around this region. The conditions of these buildings are mild, since many of the cloth on the building has been torn into separate pieces. Since many people do not have enough money to maintain an appealing structure of the buildings. The spacing of the buildings are very narrow, causing you to have no space to walk through them. Last, the objects that are surrounding the buildings are books, magazines, old children toys, bikes, cars and different types of signs. For example, like the one you see in the beginning of the photograph.
5). I believe that the tone of this photograph is some what depressing. Since when I first saw the old toys, books and magazines I believe that people were trying to sell them to get extra cash. Since when the Great Depression occurred it caused many people to loose their homes, jobs and money. So i believe people were trying to sell these items to make some extra profits. Also, I believe that the tone of this photograph is mildly depressing, since many are roaming the streets and being no productive. Since many of these people may have lost jobs, which maybe caused them to roam around searching for alternative jobs.
6). I feel some what disappointed when I look at this picture. Since I see many people roaming the streets finding no place to go, since many during the mid/early 1900's didn't have jobs. Also, I feel somewhat realized when i look at this picture, since I don't' really see many people living in poverty. All i see is many people lercing aorund having nothing to do . Some may not have homes, but at a least I see cars were many people can live.
7a). What was the thesis you were suggesting while taking this photograph?
7b). What was feelings while taking this photograph?

malllllllloryyyyyakjfdvhl_rbfg;jd.jpg

1). This picture was captured during December, 1935 by Evans, Walker.
2). This photograph was taken during the day in an urban area. This is also located outdoors, so it has lighting.
3). In this photograph you can clearly see that there is a mass majority of people, about six. They seem to be old men in their 40's and all of them are wearing suits. I believe that all of the men in the photograph are black . last, what distinguished features and what catches my eyes first would be that these men are trying to sell news paper to enable them to have a higher profit, more of what they all ready have. though i do not believe that they will be able to have a high number of profits or even low. Since many people during the The Great depression had very low income, so they wouldn't be able to purcase any of the news papers. As you can see there is no one buying any of the newspapers.
4).The structures you see in this photograph are businesses, which have inconsequential amounts of space. The businesses are in defective shape, Since many of the writings on the walls had disappeared and a large quantity of the paint on the walls had disappeared. This building is also surrounded by newspapers, another store, a bus and what looks like a gas pump.
5). I believe that the tone of this photograph is depressing, since the workers are trying to make some money, even though they can't. Also, sad, negative and dark. Since during the Great Depression many were in a distressful mood.
6). I believe this photograph helped symbolize an area of great disappointment and mournful time in our American history. Since as you can see in this picture many people are left without jobs and do as much as they possible can to earn a salary. If they don't they will be left homeless and be left in poverty, like many others Americans. So in this picture it helps symbolize what people would to earn money. Like a random job of selling newspapers.
7a). Why did you take pictures of all black men?
7b). What did you believe the selling of the newspapers help symbolize?

Alabama--Dallas County---Selma
Main street architecture. Selma, Alabama.

1.) This picture was taken by Walker Evans (1903-1975) and was published in December, 1935.
2.) This scene captures the outside of a string of buildings located in an urban area. The area is very bright which indicates that the sun was out. Therefore, it was taken in the middle of the day.
3.) The street shown in the picture is abandoned as far as people goes. The parked car suggests that there were people around, just not in the view of the camera. The tightly connected buildings seem to be individual businesses you would find on a city street. For example, on the far right the sign says Southern Supply Co. of Furniture. Perhaps whomever was in the car, went shopping in the furniture store. The buildings in the picture show an old urban style of architecture and the car is a very old model, therefore, indicating that this picture was taken during the Great Depression. Also, both signs in the picture caught my eye. They gave me the information to discover that this was taken down South in Alabama.
4.) As expected in city life, there are no regular homes in this urban photograph. There are only three buildings each containing a business such as the Southern Supply Co. of Furniture(on right) and some kind of Alabama service on the left. There may be people living in apartments above the stores. There are no spaces between each building because the cities were tightly packed with businesses and apartments. Outside, the street is almost entirely empty except for that one old car.
5.) The tone of the photograph is very light. It isn't cluttered at all, and rather spacious considering no one is around. I would say it depicts a positive feel because the businesses seem successful and nothing negative is occurring. Also, even though this is during the time of the Great Depression, you don't see any signs of poverty or too much struggle. Someone was even able to pay for a car and the businesses don't say that they are out of business. Sunlight is beaming down on this street with only darkness from the few shadows.
6.) I enjoy this photograph because despite all of the negative things that occurred during the Great Depression, this picture shows that some were able to pull through. I found many pictures with suffering children and adults who were out of a home and things to eat. This photograph only shows the positives of urban life with three successful businesses. Also, it is bright which makes it less stressful and gloomy to look at. It gives you an idea of the time period because of the old architecture and car model. Lastly, the lack of people around makes this street in Alabama seem quiet and relaxed.
7.) 1. Why was no one around when this photograph was taken?
2. What inspired you(the photographer) to take a picture of these particular buildings/businesses?

Alabama--Eutaw
Houses in the Negro section of Eutaw, Alabama.

1.) This picture was taken in May 1941 by photographer Jack Delano.
2.) This photograph was set in Eutaw, Alabama in the African American section of town. It is a very rural area; you can see the large space between each home and the long dirt road. The picture is mostly bright except for the shadows hovering over the African American children standing on the porch of the front home. Because it is very light out and the children are clearly seeking shade, I assume it was in the afternoon that this picture was taken.
3.) Only two African American children are shown in this picture, a girl and a boy. The girl seems to be around thirteen years old and the boy is probably nine or ten years old. Their skin is very dark and their black hair is very short. They seem very tired and annoyed with heat as they hang around there on the front porch. Their clothes are also bland and dirty. Due to the shadow, it is hard to clearly see their faces. I imagine, though, that they aren't too happy about getting their picture taken in the middle of the hot day; especially because they are probably child laborers and exhausted from doing work. The young boy first caught my eye because he wasn't standing like the girl; he was sitting down as if he were too tired to get up.
4.) There are no buildings in this picture, only a street of small wooden homes. Each home is about the length of a home a part and they don't look very sturdy. I assume there are no businesses around because in a rural place like this, everyone makes what they need. A long dirt road lies outside the houses, and on the other side of the street, it seems that there is a field. Farmers in the neighborhood probably use that field to grow their crops and make a living. Also, telephone poles line the street which, I am sure, are no use to the people in the picture because they probably can't afford a telephone.
5.) I would say the tone of this photo is heavy because no one I know has had to live like the children in this picture. It gives a very negative feel to try and imagine what they go through each day. Instead of playing like other children, these kids work all day out in the fields. Besides the shadow hovering over them and the sorrow in their faces, this picture is mostly light.
6.) This picture makes me feel really depressed when I consider everything I had at that age, and what they will never have from living in poverty. Without even seeing the close details of their faces, you can tell that their expressions are far from happy. Furthermore, this photo gives me a good idea of the hardships during the Great Depression rather than just the wealthier people who made it through the Depression without much difficulty. I also can see the agriculture side of the Depression as opposed to urban life. Lastly, I can feel the hate the children are containing due to segragation and racism that was in great amounts during this time. The town was separated into different sections keeping the African Americans away from people who are white. The African American children in the picture were very limited in life compared to the white children during the Great Depression.
7.) 1.Were the children in the picture child laborers?
2.Did the African American children in this section of town get an education?

Alabama--Greensboro
Main Street of Greensboro, Alabama.

1.) This picture was also taken in May 1941 by photographer Jack Delano.
2.) This photograph was set on a busy street in an urban community. The bright sun indicates that it was probably in the middle of the day that this photo was taken. The city is crowded with people coming and going on foot and by car.
3.) There are many people in this picture; I can spot around nine going into the building on the left(Grady Lawless & Co.). They all seem to be going in and out of stores or parking their cars on the side of the road. I'd say most of them are young adults or older. Their clothes is mostly rolled up shirts and brown overalls. Also, I noticed that the majority of them are African Americans. For no reason at all, the Coca-Cola sign first caught my eye. It is funny to think that Coca-Cola goes that far back.
4.) A row of businesses are in the photograph, but no homes. Each building is packed close together on each side of the street. Nothing but cars and street walkers surround each building. They seem to be in fairly good condition for city buildings.
5.) I'd say the tone of the photo is light. Nothing too intense is occurring; people are simply passing by and shopping. Because nothing to saddening is happening, the photograph has a positive feel. The picture has plenty of light coming from the sun in the east.
6.) I think this photograph is very interesting. You can see all of the old style cars and shops. Also, it is clear in this picture what city life was like during the Great Depression. I like this photo because nothing negative is happening; everyone is keeping to themselves and moving through the city like the Great Depression wasn't happening. People in the picture must have been maintaining a stable economic position because none of the businesses were out of business and many of them could afford a car. Lastly, the setting chosen for this picture was a good idea because the lighting and commotion gives off a positive feel.
7.) 1. Was this only an African American section of town?
2. Why did you chose to take a picture with these particular businesses in it?

This Photograph was taken by Dorothea, Lange in July 1936.(1) The Setting of the picture is outside on a field. It is during the daytime and the photo appears light. The Farm doesn't look like it is near the city and is rural, not urban.(2) There are 2 people in the picture. One is a young child and the other a young woman. Ages range from 7 to 14. Type of clothing both the women in the picture is a dress, but not a luxury dress, perhaps a work dress used when working in the farm. The First thing i notice in the picture is that the people working on the farm are both women wearing the same dress and hat. In the picture they are almost doing the same motion as they hoe the ground. The farm is very long and wide and you can see trees far in the background.(3) I don't see any structures in this photograph. All that i see is trees in the far background and rows of dirt with crops ontop.(4) The tone of the photograph is light and it seems to look negative as the women work on the farm don't look happy working on the farmland. They looked sort of forced and reluctant to do the farmwork.(5)
I think this photograph shows who actually worked on the farms, women and young children. They women and girls wore white work dress when working on the crops. This one image really gives me an idea of how it felt to work on the farmland. I could imagine wearing a white, plain dress all day in the sun, hoeing crops reluctantly as I grew more and more tired. I could imagine the large sixes of these farms in effort to produce alot of crops. it makes me realize how much i should be grateful to, when i am hungry, to just go to the store and buy what ever i needed rather than just growing all the food mysellf. I should be grateful to not have to do as much lobor, as a girl, just to supply food. I t looks like taking care of a farm tht large would be more difficult than i would think. There isn't any buildings at all or any businesses available in the picture, whicj tells me that, in this time, some farms and homes didn;t have any access to trade as eaily since they may be far away because of how much they need to spread out to accummulate the space they owned for their farm. To me, this picture gives off a negative tone because the women/child don't look like they are having any joy in doing the work. Their expressions look as if they don't want to be their and were foces to be their doing the work their master told them so to do. I am shocked to see how the women is wearing nothing at all to add comfort to her feet as she walks around crops and dirt that may have contain sharp rocks and other irritants to the bottom of the foot.
My 2 questions fo rthe photographer:
- What idae were you trying to capture with this photograph and why?
-(subject-woman) Do you enjoying doing any farmwork at all? Why do you think so?
8c29067r.jpg
This photograph was taken by Jack Delano, in May 1941 on Greensboro Alabama. The setting of the photograph is inside a house. The lighting is light because you could see the shadows of the people in the picture. The photograph looks as if it is in an urban area because the wall as covered with newspapers that may have been gotten from a newsstand in the city. I think the photograph is in an urban location since the location it gives is “near Greensboro” instead of in it. The time of day looks like night because the lights are on in order to see inside the home, and it doesn’t look like sunlight in the home. There are people in this picture, 2 men, one young boy, and a young woman. The ages of men might be around 50, the boy around 7-5, and the young woman 10-14 years of age. Both men are wearing the same thing, tan dress pants and a collared shirt. They are also wearing a brown hat. One of the men is smoking what looks to be a cigarette. The young girl has short hair and is wearing a collared work dress/jumper, unlike the men, she isn’t wearing any shoes. The little boy is wearing a t-shirt and pants it id hard to tell whether or not he is wearing any shoes or not. It looks as if their home was only one room and there is no mother in the house. There is only one bed for everyone to sleep in and the walls are covered with what look like to be newspapers. There is one picture hanging on the wall. What catches my eye first is the older man sitting on the bed with a cigarette as he holds the young boy. The picture is what there home is in the inside, a single room. The home looks like it is in poor condition since the walls are covered with newspaper and there is only one bed to sleep for everyone in the home. It looks like it cannot be taken care of sine there is a scarce amount of money they have to use. The tone of the photograph is light and is negative because when you first look at this photograph, you see a poor family in their only, one roomed home, you think, “What made it so bad that they have to live like this?” it doesn’t show any good and positive effects of the Great Depression. The photo has a lot of light from in front of the people in the photograph. I’m not sure what it may be from but a lamp or light the photographer may have placed for a better photo.
My response to this photo is that it really shows how it felt to live in a family effected badly by the great Depression. You could tell that the home wasn’t the richest of the homes, but it was enough for them to dwell in until they obtained enough money for a better home. Some families never did reach enough. You could tell that it wasn’t easy to live like that family with only one bed. I am surprised to see there is no motherly figure in this picture that usually takes care of children while the husband works. I feel the photograph is a really picture to portray how a family lived during the Great Depression. I thought it sort of weird to see a man smoking a cigarette when holding
such a young boy in a room with 2 other people. But then you remember that this was during the 1940s, where people may not have known of the dangers of cigarettes and there probably weren’t any regulations against them as well. On the far right side of the photo, it looks like there is a part of headboard of a board, but I am not sure if it is another bed or not. But still, having live the same room with a whole family is a hardship with only two beds and with that size of a room. I remember having to share a room close to that size with only two beds and it was very difficult to even sleep for only one night. I can’t imagine living in the same room like that all my life or at least for as long as they did.

Questions-
1) Family- Is there a mother figure at all in your family, if not, why?
2) Did the children get any education at all?

picture_of_feet.jpg

This photo was taken by jack Delano in May 1941 on a farm near Greensboro Alabama. It was taken outside and the lighting was as if it was a perfect sunny day. The settingis rural because they are on a range on their farm that is far from urbanization due to the amount space needed to farm. This photograph was taken during the day. Yes, there are people in this picture, in fact 4 young children. There are 3 young women, and one is a boy. The ages are very hard to tell, since you can’t see their faces, but, because of the size of their feet and how tall they are, they range from 12-15 years old. One girl is wearing a jumper like dress that is a button down and long sleeved. Another is wearing a plain and dirty long sleeved dress. The boy next to her is wearing overalls that are rolled up. There is a hole on one of his knees, and another hole that is partially sewn up above his knee and at the bottom of that side looks like it is wet with water. The other next to him is wearing a rather clean white dress; the only one of the four that is actually wearing something on their feet is the girl with the dirty and plain dress. But she isn’t wearing them in the picture, but her feet are right behind them, as if she just took them off. The distinguishing feature of this picture is that nobody’s face is showing in this picture, so there are no emotions that are captured. The picture uses the condition of the children’s’ clothing and feet as an image in your head to express what they feel in a way. What catches my eye first is the middle girl’s dress and the boys pants. They look so damaged. They look like they had just finished their work, or were just in the middle of working. The boy’s pants caught my eye because they were so damages with holes and patches. They were rolled up and wet. It looks like the boy had just done a lot of hard work. And the girl has stains allover the bottom of her dress. Both of them had dirty legs and feet and crossed their feet. The children are in front of their home. It looks lie it isn’t in great condition because the boards looks worn and there are holes in the floor. You can’t see if there are any other structures near the home. The tone of the photograph is light and looks negative because it shows that these children just went through hard work than play because their way of standing doesn’t look like they are happy and as if they just had fun. They are standing calmly as if they were tired and crossing their feet as if they didn’t really care for the picture. Their arms are by their side just hanging their as if they were worn out as well.
This photograph really shows what children went through working for their families in the hot sun on these large farms. They showed it was hard and dirty. I thought this photo was interesting because I could get what the photo was saying just by look at someone’s waist down. I could tell what they previously did and how they felt I didn’t have any emotions to rely on to just tell me how they fell. This photo caught my eye because it wasn’t like the others where you could read the emotions of the people and write what you thought. I picked this photo because I could imagine what the children were doing in the field just using what they were wearing and the condition of the clothing. This picture also showed that families had more children so that there was more labor for farms. As you can see there are 4 children here. The family looked as if they lived in a house that was small and not taken care of well. You could tell by the floor they were standing on. This photo really gives you the hardships of some children and what they did during their day.
Questions:
Did you take this photo in the middle of their work, or right after?
What was the expression of the children’s faces when you were taking this photo?
